It really depends on the type of site you are trying to promote. If it is a poker forum then you want to get involved in affiliate programs, if it is general merchandise then you need to get your banner on other people's sites. Go to site that you "think" may be interested even though they are not related and offer them an affiliate promotion. Also go to sites that are "similar" and offer to trade banners. The more sites showing your banner the more chance of attracting people.

Well it definitely depends on where you are in your promotions. What kind of promotions you are already doing and which ones seems to be getting the feedback that you a looking for.You also have to take into consideration the type of site you have and from there you can decide which is the best for your. Find someone with the knowledge of the topics you are looking to promote and pick their brain. This is called networking. You help them they help you and you both come out winners. Without more details on the type of site you are talking about it is a little difficult to get into specifics.

Jnights yes people forget they can be their own affiliate. I do check out advertising prices on other sites but sometimes the domain owner or site master has stars in their eyes and wants unheard of amounts. But for a big splash launch it might be worth it.

Depending on the type of site you are promoting I would suggest going to forums that cater to that group. Like others have mentioned get involved in a network and use affliate links.

if you try to find common ground for apartments here in Costa Rica, all you get is high priced vacation rentals and we wish to appeal to retired low profile types of individuals (like ourselves) - Craigslist helps but we have trouble finding other forum sites open to suggestions

I would search for blogs about Costa Rica and make relevant comments and as an offhand metion your site.Comment about the POST. Don't just promo your site.

If you really want to promote a web page then you need to seek other types of page visibility options. http://www.glizm.com can increase the visibility of your website on some popular social networking sites. Best yet, you don't have to pay a dime if you don't want to. Check it out and see if it works for you.
