Window/Screen resolution

George from glrsales -

What is the minimum screen resolution your site should display suitably at? What do you design for?

The first step to answer that question I believe is to know what your users are using. These are the result from a survey we ran this morning. (The survey is a javascript that logs the screen and window resolutions for each page view).

This survey shows we have very few users with screen or window resolution under 800x600. I have no interest in worrying about what any of our pages look like for those users. What is the point of optimizing any of the pages to look good at 240x320?

There are a few users at 1600 and 1920. Some pages might read poorly on those as well (very long lines, especially with small fonts which hard to read). Again there are very few users there (and maybe they use smaller windows - use a 1280x 1024 screen but never surf with windows maximized).

Another question is if one uses a smaller screen (say 800x600) is the page useful without sideways scrolling -- ie maybe just an "unimportant" advertising column.

I surf many of our pages on my Nokia 770 (pda with 800x400 screen... I can' t imaging surfing the web on a pda with a 320x240 screen). Most of them displayed pretty good. Our link submission pages were the worst, because of the input fields forcing the page width to sideways scroll. We're looking at adjusting the field lengths and/or right column so they view better at 800 wide screens.

Of course this survey is a little flawed as it returns results from users with images and javascript enabled. Of course without javascript things like Adsense and many other revenue generation programs won't operate either.

I am satisifed that my concern should be for our pages to view properly on a 800x600 or larger screen. Aside the forums here viewed just fine on the Nokia 770.

Comment #1 Sapphire from Outer Space -

I wouldn't go less than 800x600. Anything below that would just have so few users that it wouldn't be worthwhile to waste your time with it. My browser is 1440x900 and I usually try to make it look good at that resolution. I think between those two settings you cover the majority of the most used sizes.

Comment #2 Paul Roupinian from Redondo beach -

800x600 has got to be the way. I had a IBM laptop with a very high definition screen and I freaked my eyes out watching movies and such on it then I got a huge monitor and it was like whoaa!

Comment #3 PokerPrincess from Hogstown, The Universe -

Well, I truly think that the 800x600 is definitely the smallest resolution to go with and that the average computer runs at 1024 x 768 so if you keep it within this range you will satisfy most users.

If you want to go a little higher I wouldn't suggest too much higher or you will lose some potential customers.

If they don't see the screen propery they will lose interest quickly and surf on.
