Do you generally completely design your own sites, or do you like to use a template? For a beginner do you think a template would be a good way to go? Also, what are some good sites for templates? I know I can find them through google, but I always trust sites more if someone recommends them.

I think templates are worse for beginners and the wrong way to go. Templates are good for advanced users because they will enough elements that the template will be ultiately unrecognizable.

Templates can be good because they save a lot of time building the structure and nuts and bolts of a formatted site. But that doesn't mean thinking is not required and composition for the rest of the site.

I am struggling now with a client who wants to keep an old bad format but wants all new text. They won't "see" it until I do it but they won't let me restructure the site until the content is done. It would be ten times easier for me to format while writing inside the site.

Are we talking about templates for business interfaces or just for hobby sites? Because I can see how a business template for a hobby site might look strange. But likewise if it has a individual appeal then a hobby site doesn't want to look too businessy.

I was talking about just a personal site for now. Maybe a business site somewhere down the road when I've had more experience. The little experience I've had has just been working on my own using html. I was thinking about getting a little more creative.

I usually grab a template when i am tired of what i normally do and want to stretch my keyboard a little around a new look. These exercises can pay off in the long run when you need some template ideas and don't have time to test them out from the get.

I have used all the personal templates i adopted for personal websites and i used the personal websites to show them off.
