I love using open source warez for quick designs like dotnetnuke and joomla and simple design forum.

But I always seme to run into a security glitch because people are always tryng to hack them.

Then you have to redo the entire application.

Opinions?

Pick something you like as a base and evolve it from there for your own use. (and keep an eye our for all the security issues on the original package).

Make sure you are not using a beta version. The proofed releases are a bummer because by then hackers have figured out how to bust the programming. That is why they make subsequent releases. Who can stay ahead of all those patches and fixes?

Many hosting companies allow beta software but put in the small print that they are not responsible for support, which means you have to trawl endless forums and hire someone to fix your stuff.

it's a very valid point, but if you go with the solid ones that are already somewhat mature then you shouldn't have much of a problem. DNN (DotNetNuke) for example, is amazing now and not easily hackable. Also, you can always get a programmer (or do it yourself if you have the skills) to fix holes because you have the source to work with.
