I am currently working on developing my own website but I am not sure exactly on how to get started. Has anyone built thier own website before? If so, what program did your use?

There are many ways to do it; hand-code, Dreamweaver, Frontpage, or hire someone else (although there are some other programs). Me, I hire someone else, because I can't code or nothing.

I am fair at html but not good enough to design the site that I want. I guess I might have to hire someone. Atleast I know it will be done right.

I would think that you have to decide what type of website you want to have. You have to be conversant in all aspects of the website such as how to produce logos, banners, html, advertisements. If you feel comfortable do these things then just get a website up... register the name first and start putting some of the information where you would like to see it.It also depends onwhat other things you want to add, whether it be product, then you need pictures and descriptions, or whether it be extra things like community weather reports, local news in order to attract people to come in. If you don't feel comfortable working in all the venues then I would suggest you do what you can and then perhaps hire someone to fill in the gaps. This might save you money.

The easiest way for me right now is through frontpage. If you know a little html then this should be fairly easy. If you know what you want to do and what you want to produce then go for it. The best way to learn is by doing. Also check on google you might find some really cool tutorials.

I know what I want on my page and no I don't plan on selling any product. With that I would need a merchant account and go through the process of setting up shopping carts, etc. I have a concept in mind, so that is not the problem. I think I will give frontpage a try and go from there.

I would start with paypal and if things developed then get a merchant account. Now that paypal accepts credit card payments from non-members it is easy for everyone to buy from you when you use only paypal.Lots of people complain about paypal putting a hold on your money. That can also happen with your merchant account. What is extemely important (with either) is that you address customer service issues promptly. If you don't your customers will complain to the credit card company. Let a few of those pile up and they will hold your money,
