I had never realized the importance of constructing the URL carefully enough for SEO purposes. Initially I just used compound words for file names such as /stockinvestment.html. I have now changed to using an underscore having realised that this wasn't going to cut it with the search engines, ie /stock_investment.html

I read an article the other day that said hyphens were actually the way to go. It's important to not combine the words together, but I'm not sure if underscores are as effective as hyphens or not.

domains can have hypens but not underscores. That goes for subdomains too.

Interesting that about hyphens in URL's. I wonder why underscores are used at all then in naming conventions for file names, as hyphens are much closer to the way a language is used than underscores.

I read before that putting hyphen is actually a good way in making your pages' url easier for search engines to locate and direct your sites to viewers.

But still, the obvious factor for a better SEO result is your site's content and your domain's URL.
