I paid a listing service once. I had great results, my site came up number one in searches for quite awhile. But it was expensive, so I just couldn't afford to keep it up. I just wonder if I could've gotten the same results if I had just used better meta tags and did a little more self promotion. Do you use a listing service? Do you think it's worth it?

Yes and no. I don't know what search listing you used but of course that factors into the raw search result. I am not sure also how much is too much. I do not know what the purpose of your site is. Sales? To inform? A community?

You know, it was so long ago that I really don't remember the name of the listing service anymore. I believe I spent around $60 and the site (which is long gone now) was a forum about reality tv.

Meta tags? That doesn't have anything to do with search engine results anymore, except maybe in small, worthless search engines.

I would think that best way to promote a forum is by exchanging forum banners with other "similar" or "related" forums. That way you don't have to pay anyone for anything that you get. When you use related forums it works well for both forums because people are already hitting one or the other and certainly would want to see related material or information.

I notice many times when I do a search lets say at yahoo or google, some of the results I get, even on the first page are from forums. How do they get so high up on the list? I would figure like most people, that the first page would all be fact related sites on the search, but that definately isn't so.

Maybe that is a question that should be present to google. Maybe they get the most money from the forum sites or maybe it is just that most people are looking for forum sites rather than other so they set it up based on popularity.Has anyone ever asked them? Does anyone know of a way to find out. I'm sure there is a logical reason for them to do it this way. I just don't know if it is because of profit or popularity.

RiverQueen, your explanation is not why forums are high. SEO, at least with Google, doesn't have to do with traffic or how much money they make. I personally don't understand how it happens, but I know it's not that.

Forums are usually packed with great content and lots of excellent keywords. If you're lucky enough to have one of the big search engines spider them then you're in very good shape because content and links are key to SEO and good forums have an abundance of both.
