How did SEO contests get started? I know that now most SEO contesets are for fake words, and I thought I heard in the beginning they were for real terms. I'd really like to see the first one though, that'd be great. Anyone have a link?

I googled it and came up with this info:

"First official SEO contest seems to be organized in the USA in 2004 under the name of SERP, abbreviation of Search Engine Results Page or page of results of a search engine. The objective was thus to rank at the top of results on Google.com with keyword "SERP". Before that, some webmasters launched out challenges on SEO forums."

Hmmmmmmmmmm interesting. Can someone please explain what an SEO contest is. I have never heard the term and definitely not familiar with it.

How does it operate and what are the advantages of using an SEO contest on your domain?

I was in a contest like this once. I think it is the same thing. I should have known the guy was a crook because the forum I heard about the contest on kicked him off it from other posts alerting the admin.

If you really pay off the prizes then OK.
