I don't think I'm a dumb person but I keep seeing this term SEO.
Can anyone here explain what SEO is exactly? I am very curious. I probably would know it if it wasn't an anagram but I just can't connect anything I do know with that anagram that makes any sense.

Search Engine Optimization. Which really isn't optimizing the search engine, but optimizing our websites for the search engines.

What roles do Meta Tags play in SEO these days? Are they still the magic bullet that they were once claimed to be. I have heard that the big guys don't even take them into account when spidering websites. What is the truth?

You can look at Google's site they actually have quite a lot of useful information and I get the feeling that they like it when people follow their guidelines accurately.
