Dreamweaver
Boyne from Crooked Usage -
I am considering using a WYSIWYG editor for my website work and have been toying with the idea of going for Dreamweaver. At that price though, I need to be happy with it, and I have read several articles that seem to imply that Dreamweaver adds a lot of junk code into the HTML tags. Anyone know whether this is in fact a problem?

I use an older version - Dreamweaver MX, and find it pretty satisfying. There is the need to clean up the code occasionally, but generally speaking it gets the job done. Like all software it has it's glitches and many of these have probably been ironed out in the newer releases, but I don't believe in springing for a newer version just for the bells and whistles (which usually only blow for Macromedia's bank balance anyway).

What are the help files like? My problem with the Macromedia stuff is that I find the built in help incomprehensible. Typically written by programmers rather than by users! Are there lots of decent books available to fill this gap?

The help files for Dreamweaver are actually pretty useless. For example in Dreamweaver MX from a few years ago, the default saved file extension for an ordinary html page was .htm. To find a way to change that to .html was an almost impossible riddle as it involved editing a file tucked away in some absolutely unintuitively named subdirectory. When I had to reinstall Dreamweaver I had to search for ages again to find out how to do this simple task. Wish manuals could be written by users and not programmers.

I've seen some quite interesting free tools out there for the taking, and it may be that they can do the job one needs if one is capable of doing a bit of tweaking oneself at the end. Why fork out all the bucks to Macromedia when there are free tools available?

You'll be much further ahead if you learn the html yourself. By saving snippets, using server side includes and other tricks of the trade you'll be able to produce websites without the baggage the programs carry with ease.
