How does Paint Shop Pro stack up against Photoshop these days? I've heard that it is aeons ahead of where it used to be when it was free shareware. I realise it probably doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Paintshop, but at the end of the day it comes down to bang for the buck, and it is way cheaper.

You are correct, the new version of Paintshop Pro is close behind the heels of Photoshop when it comes to the everyday functions that most people want from a graphics program, in fact for most people, unless they have really special requirements, the usability and cheapness of PSP makes it a hands down winner as far as I am concerned.

Is it still possible to get the Freeware versions of PSP anywhere? I think the last free version was version 6 or 7, but in any event from version 8 the interface changed to ape the Photo Shop look, and in my opinion this was a silly mistake. What gave PSP such an edge in the 'amateur' graphics market was it's ease of use and simple interface which was sacrificed in order to make it look more like it's more expensive and fancy competitor. Somehow one feels that software designers have a habit of shooting themselves in the foot when they run scared because of the competition.

I forked out the cash for an upgrade from version 7 to version 8 (the new-look PaintshoPro) and found that my laptop was actually freezing up on a random basis. Eventually I uninstalled it and this ceased. I have since moved on to a new machine and changed from XP Home to XP Pro, but I've never re-installed version 8. I find version 7 perfect for my needs and I do quite a bit of editing of digital images for my ebay store.

Yes version 7 is excellent and I haven't found a need to move to 8 either. I recently reinstalled my operating system and needed to edit an image while out of the office. I downloaded GIMP which is nice, but no where near as good.

There is an excellent little free application for PSP 7 that I use all the time which allows one to set the cropping tool to a constant aspect ratio, so the the height and width of cropped images are always exactly in the same constant ratio. This is vital for many purposes and is of course built into version 8 and upwards. If anyone wants to know about it I'd be happy to pass it on.

Does an application like Paint Shop Pro allow one to create animated gifs? There are a number of dedicated applications that one can download to do this, but I would prefer to have one that is contained in an all round graphics program.
