I've been running AVG free anti virus software. What is everyone's opinion on this service? Do you think it's good or would I be better off paying for McAfee or Nortons?

Comment #1 Billy from Beverly Hills -

When FreeBSD or Linux you have minimal problems with viruses and spyware.

Well, I ask one of the computer experts I know because I just purchased a new IBM Pentium 4 and was going to download this as my protector.

His opinion was that it was useless as if you think about the fact of it being free what kind of time and effort are they going to put into it to keep it totally updated.

So I took his advice and downloaded the goole updater Norton Antivirus and it updates almost every day. I do feel a lot more comfortable with it I must admit.

I downloaded Spyware Doctor and then a "friend gave me the serial code". Yeah, that's how it worked out. So, I use that and it works well.

Comment #4 Sapphire from Outer Space -

rowena105, how much do they charge for the Norton Antivirus updater? Also, would I have to purchase the Norton program first in addition to the updater program or is it included in the download?

I have AVG too, my friend had it for awhile and I had nothing so I asked him how to get it and he told me. Now I have it! It slows my computer down a lot though, I don't understand that.

We have webroot spysweeper and trend micro anti virus. I don't know much about protection programs, but my computer runs perfect with these two programs. We check for viruses every now and then and nothing ever comes up. I am very happy with what we are using.

The google updater is great. What you have to do is go to google.com and click on more then click on Pack .. under Google Tools. Before you install it you will have to get rid of any norton you may have... but it brings in the Norton for free for about 6 months.... when the time is up you remove the norton again and update the goole updater and you have it free again.

I have used most of the anti virus solutions out there and I find Norton and McAfee to be resource hogs and simply not worth it. For the best free soultion I recommend Avast and for the best paid solution I recommend NOD32. Excellent choices depending on your needs.

Comment #9 Courtney from Texas -

I heard very bad things about McAfee from a friend that works on computers. I don't have a huge knowledge in this area, but this was not the first time I heard bad things about McAfee. I think Norton is one of the best.

Comment #10 webmama from Somewhere in the south -

I have heard Norton is good but it supposedly slows your computer down a lot. I was thinking of buying kaspersky or the new zone alarm with firewall, spyware, and antivirus. Right now I am using avast.

Comment #11 Sweetness from Toronto, Ontario -

Well, McAfee was originally produced for the Apple/Mac machines. I still don't think they are ready for primetime such as IBM's or other PCs.

Now McAfee says they are good for PCs but I have my doubts and don't even want to give them a try.

If you are having luck with them good for you but it's definitely not for me.

McAffee sucks, about two years ago when I wiped my bad computer clean, and then I installed McAffee on it and things started running all slow. I hate that piece of crap, I don't know why people consider it one of the best.

I am not a fan of mcafee or norton. It slowed my computer down big time. I have tried nod 32, avast, and panda. The next paid one I buy will probably be trend micro pc cillan.
