A friend of mine is in the computer repair business and would like to start advertising on the web. Where would the best place be to do this advertising? Or should he start his own website to get it up and running?

If anyone here is from Toronto, Ontario Canada and can give some ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

He should get local referrals. This is a case where national exposure won't help. Unless his fees cover massive traveling.

On the other hand if he built a page of resources that promoted his business locally and offerred content that advertisers would pay for... he could change his business model and maybe make more income from the website... (less stress too).

I think all businesses should have a website. It just makes them look more professional. If I'm thinking about doing business with someone, I always check out their website. If they don't have one, I'll usually look around for someone that does.

If he's in Toronto than he just needs to get in the yellow pages, and he should have a website. If he does computer repair locally there isn't much use advertising online.

Everyone has told you the best information: Start Local. I would try with some small startup like the yellow pages, and maybe some flyers. We have local coupons and flyers that come in an envelope once a month. He might try looking into something like that.

For that sort of business you really need to start local because you're providing a physical service. It's still important to create a website and to give out the URL to it. Even if they're talking to a potential client on the phone, it's a lot easier to tell them the website address and let them get additional information from there.

I also think you should have a website, just to look more professional, but don't invest any in SEO. It's useless for a business that deals only in person.

I have to agree with the others. With the computer repair business he needs to start locally and get his name out there. If he doesn't mind doing house calls in neighboring areas that could be a plus as well. A website is a definite must and if he is really confident with webdesign and/or hosting he could offer that as well.
