I currently have a Sony Vaio and I am very pleased with it. We had a HP laptop and it was aweful. I don't know if it was just because it was a laptop, but it had so many problems that it was claimed as a lemon.

Sony Vaios are top of the line. I had a Dell and it just would not stay robust in the face of even occasional use. I have a great fantastic amazing eMachine that does so much I wish I had bought two. I use security all the time and I stay good. But for video editing I would have to get a Vaio or something top of the line.

I've had nothing but luck with Dell. I recommend it to everyone. I'm surprised, Ben, that you had such a bad experience with your Dell. Family members that have purchased Dell on my recommendation have always had good things to say also. I guess even good companies make an occasional bad product. And, some brands just aren't for everybody.

I have had many friends who have had real problems with Dell. And their "Home Service" is a joke. That doesn't even start until after the warranty from company you bought it from runs out which is usually a year and if you buy extended for another 2-3 years... THEN AND ONLY THEN does the Dell in home service apply. Otherwise you have to box it up and return it to Dell yourself.Personally, I use IBM for laptops (absolutely the best) and MDG for desktop. I have a desktop computer from them that I have had for 8 years trouble free and I can do just about anything I want with it. Check out MDG.com online and you will see that their prices are great and they stand behind their computers 100%.

I have two Dells, and they are great. I used to have a Compaq, and oh my God, it sucked so bad. Also, it was a Windows Millenium, which also sucks. Compaq + Windows ME = Crap. But I replaced it with a Dell, so it's all good, don't worry about me. I said don't!

HP and Compaq I have heard mixed reviews about. Sony is great as is Dell. You can't go wrong with either of those. My suggestion is to just get a good warranty with whatever you do pick out, because if you don't you will wish you had. I have an HP printer that is great, but my HP digital camera is nothing but problems. So HP can be good too.

Dell are fantastic, but I'm getting tired of their customer service. Still my most highly recommended brand. HP laptops are pretty decent, but they don't seem to have the quality of Dells and I have heard great things about Sony and Toshiba.

Customer service at Dell is a pain. I like the my Dell and is probably the only brand that I will buy. I had a roomate with a gateway and the thing short circuited itself when she turned it on. I haven't tried an HP computer but I do like their printers and scanners.

I don't know if I want a Dell because I want to be able to walk into a store to let them know there are problems. It always seems like you just get the runaround over the phone. Thanks guys for the many great suggestions!

I have a friend that got a gateway that quit working the day he got it. They replaced it of course, but that still left him computerless for a few days. He vowed to never buy gateway again. He bought a Dell last time and he's been happy with it. I've never really had to use Dell's customer service. I've just had great computers from them. But I usually get a new one every few years.

I have had a decent experience with dell so far. I haven't had to use their customer service yet but I have to admit it is the best computer I have had.

I have a sony and love it. I stay on the go most of time so a desktop doesn't do me too much good. I have one in the office but my sony is my life line haha.

I've had about 3 Compaq computers and I can't complain. My husband has had 2 Dell computers so far and has had no problems.

We've bought a number of HP laptops over the last few years, most of them pretty cheaply at Best Buy, and have been pleasantly surprised at the service we've got out of them. Somehow there is a lot to be said for actually being able to try something out before buying it, unlike a straight online purchase.

There are a lot of no name brands advertised at the back of many of the computer magazines. Obviously it pays someone to put an ad repeatedly in a magazine like PC Magazine so I assume that these computers sell. Presumably the far eastern clones still have a big section of the market!

I imagine that most of the people buying those are first time buyers just looking for the cheapest deal that they can get. With hardware being pretty generic and dependable these days, it is easy for a manufacturer in one of the far eastern countries where labor is very cheap to churn these out pretty easily and cheaply. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
