I have now switched to WS_FTP after trying a variety of other ftp programs. In my opinion paying a reasonable price for a piece of software that gets the job done properly is worth every cent. I have spent hours waiting for a big upload to be completed using some of the freebie ftp software only to have it bomb at the last minute with no recover facility available.

A decent ftp program should allow one to recover and restart the download, in the case of the system or the program bombing. This is absolutely necessary as any system can lose the connection for reasons entirely out of the control of the application performing the download. I would never use an ftp program that didn't provide this.
