One great way to use a stable of domain names you aren't using is to build traffic to diverse keywords associated with them and put the links everywhere, then point all the domains to one focus site as a subdomain or pointer.

It's interesting to study the retention from the traffic stats. You can see which browsers come from which referrals and which stay the longest.

Comment #1 Ben Scudder from Kansas -

That's really only going to be of use if there is a link between what the keywords and interest are for the people using the link for the main domain name and the material or subject matter at the ultimate destination website.

But people do it all the time.

Comment #2 Nancy from Los Angeles -

Yes, but why not register several domains and make the auxiliary ones ON TOPIC and link to the MAIN domain?

Comment #3 Ben Scudder from Kansas -

Because maybe you don't have time to make 50 new web sites in one day and don't want to lose traffic to your main domain. pehaps you want all your marketing effort to drive to one site and not split between 50 landing pages saying nothing more than "this page is for sale".

Comment #4 kcmo from KC MO -

I imagine that wouldn't be very cost effective. Buying all those domains could get expensive.

Comment #5 SomeoneAwful from The World -

Subdomains are a good way to save money from buying new domains, and all the benefits Paul said, but subdomains are hard to remember, and hard to get up high in SEs.

Comment #6 netseller from ask me -

I never really thought of doing that. I could see how it would work but at the same time being cost effective would be an issue. I might have to give it a try.

Sounds like a great idea and it would eliminate some of the issues with violating Google's TOS by creating lots of gateway pages. Very interesting suggestion.
