I don't use subdomains
Kaabi from Maryland -
Lots of people make new sites from one domain by using subdomains, but it's hard for people to remember subdomains and I don't think they do well on Google. I don't have ANY subdomains on my site, but I don't think that's unusual.

We always use subdomains and they perform in the search engines as good or better than www. Many of our sites rate better for something.domain rather than www.domain.With the subdomains you can target topics or sub topics. To contrast our directory directory.classifieds1000.com we are trying a different concept with subdomains on http://www.lovemylinks.com

I think subdomains are good ideas. They are unique and identify what someone needs and is looking for. I don't really come accross a lot of subdomains, but I don't think they are a bad idea. It is all about preference. One opinion vs another opinion. It will help to send people to a direct subject area they are looking for on your site.

I honestly don't think it matters. If you're lucky enough to show up in a google search, people are just going to click the link to get your sub domain anyway. Then if they like it, they'll bookmark it. There's nothing for them to remember.

I do agree that subdomains have promise. Is there a subdomains 101 on here? I would like to learn more about marketing the various topics inside with subdomains.is that the same thing as a subdirectory with a cms installed?

Subdomains don't do better in search engines just because they don't have a www. Oh, WAIT. I just realized something... they probably do. Because there are less characters, and Google ranks based on how many characters fit the keyword out of all characters. So if www. isn't there, that's four characters missing. Interesting... but then again, you have that extra space of the domain name.

Okay, so let me see if I understand this correctly. I'm in the process of purchasing my own domain name. I've been looking for a hosting site as well and many of them have packages that state you get 1 free domain name and up to 6 subdomains included. I don't really understand how that works..If my domain name is mysite.com...what are your subdomains? Would it be subdomain.mysite.com or something like that?

Anyone? I'd like to know the answer to this too...Is a subdomain just a domain that's under a main domain? If it's under a main domain, wouldn't it need to be listed as subdomain.maindomain.com or something like that?
