I'd like to get a survey from folks who have been using their domain and web site resources for .net websites and names.

Do you find that with strong marketing and content "make up" for the not being the top dotcom?

If you are doing promotion off the net I think you have to use do t com. Radio, TV, Newspapers, Business Cards... anywhere people have to "remember" and then type in the domain... it's gotta be dot com.

If they come from search engines and/or links... does it matter?

I think Billy is right. If I see a website advertised out somewhere off the net, sometimes I'll remember the name of the site but just take the .com for granted. I think your mind gets so used to identifying websites with .com that you just automatically think that way. A friend of ours has a .net site and it took me the longest time to get used to typing .net for his site. It's like my fingers automatically go to .com when I'm typing in a url.

I totally agree with the dot.com. I had a friend who started up a yahoo mail addy and was getting very frustrated trying to reach her. I finally had to tell her my e-mail addy and request that she send one to me.

I actually had everything correct "except" she had used Yahoo.ca and I never even thought of using that. It has been fixed now but veering away from the dot.com can be confusing and frustration to people who just don't think "outside the box".

Most of the older generation on computers don't even know the difference between .com and .net and think they are both the same so their frustration levels seem to go higher with anything that is different.

I was always a strong believer in .coms as opposed to .nets and I still feel that typeins (where people actually type in the name in the hope that a site exists or to see what's there) are strongly in favor of .coms, however, I have seen some outstanding .net based domains that have high pageranks and drive a tremendous amount of traffic. If you market it well you'll still be in good shape. If you have the choice, naturally the .com is the better way to go.

.coms are just more memorable, and here's an example about how popular they are. A .net site I was on mentioned there site as "site.com" in part of their TOS. Ha ha!

Okay from a class I had in college on technology, .com is less reliable as .net as far as fact. A .com site could be anyone posting anything, thus may not be true. A .net site is more likely to be factual. I don't really care, either or, but I like to see fun sites with a lot of character.

Anyone can register a .net, .com, etc for any reason and put anything they want on them. .net's might be less used, and often used by internet service providers (ISP's) so there might be less crap on the .net's. The .us domain does have some limitation, that basically the person registering is has to be a US Citizen (of course its a bit more complication but that is the basics).

.com is as reliable as .net or .org. Anybody can register any three of those, making them equally reliable. Well, I guess STATISTICALLY, .orgs are more reliable...

I think .orgs have their place as informational or nonprofit sites. Or community or associations that do not mean to have big volumes or have a government associations without the.gov.

.org, for me, brings to mind organizations... non-profits, political, etc. I just can't imagine ever registering a .org domain and creating a site there.
