Short or long domain name?

angie1000 from Georgia -

My company that I am a rep for has my website with this super long address. I know I hate typing in something like that I figured that I should shorten it for something more memorable on my business cards. Picking a domain name that short and simple did the trick for me.

Shorter names have worked for me. Has anyone opted for a domain name that was really simple?

Yes I have many. Like dadforums.com. But had you considered just getting a 3 letter domain like tmz.com and then redirecting it to your company websites? You could let privileged employees and customers know the shortcut. It would save a lot of typing.

Getting a three letter domain isn't easy, it costs a lot of money, especially if you want a specific one.

When was the last time you checked an auction? they go at Pool and Snapnames every day. Three character domains can be cheap it's what name value you bring to them as a content destination that matters.

I would try for the shortest name possible. The shorter it is, the easier it's going to be to remember.

For sure the shorter the better. I've never heard of Pool or Snapnames.com. Are they similar to GoDaddy? Or do they just have a conglomeration of names that they auction off?

Also is Pool... pool.com?

Pool and snapnames are industry standard web auctions for upcoming deletes and domain names owners have put up for sale usually with a minimum. Namewinner was good because you could search the entire list of deleting domains by keywords.

Many domain ownes elect to let the names "drop" from their portfolio because it's too expensive to buy them all again (renew).

I haven't heard of those sites either but I am going to have to check them out. When it is time for a renewal on my domain I might consider doing something a little different. I never thought of a three letter domain before.

I have been reading a lot about domain names recently and I think they are still a viable way to make money and get great traffic. Short names are usually better although if a name is very targetted then there is nothing wrong with a longer name.
