There are many websites that claim to be able to value a domain name. They all factor in various "technical" details.

Unfortunately they all fail with the human factor. That is what is actually important to an actual person who might actually buy the domain.

An action site may be able to better value a domain, however that still depends on the right people bidding in that particular action.

If someone is willing to pay a million bucks for your domain, but doesn't see the action you have it in, you might get a measley $100 for it.

We once fell for one of these domain name valuation companies after receiving an email telling us they were interested in 'buying' one of our domain names. Turned out they were only really interested in selling their services as 'valuators'. There fees seemed very reasonable, but in the end all they did was pump up the valuations of our names to suck us in to keep using them to do more valuations. Luckily we did a search on the company and it turned up a bunch of people who had been burned by them. There was no real basis to their valuations other than to wildly inflate the expectations of their 'customer'. When we emailed them with proof, they became highly abusive and threatening. One needs to be careful when using such services.

In the light of the scammers out there, what is the best way then of selling domain names? If one uses one of the auction sites, one needs to have a pretty shrewd idea of the minimum price one is willing to take, but the prices out there vary so wildly, so how does one know where to pitch it? If these valuation sites can't be trusted, who can?

The best way is to use the domain auction sites. I have never sold a domain name so I don't have personal experience, but I know of a colleague who does it regularly with some pretty good results. Do a search and then search for reviews of the site.

Was rummaging through a box in the attic the other day and came across some very old comic books in pretty good condition. When one thinks what they would have been worth today if one had kept them neatly stored away from one's childhood! Same thing with domain names. In the early days they could have been snapped up for the asking and would be worth a fortune today if one had had the foresight to buy the obvious ones. Oh well, no harm dreaming!

There are of course a lot of the new .mobi names still available and who knows, these may be the subject of the same musings a few years down the line! Why not grab some now and put them away!

I did a search for .mobi names still available and it seems that most of the obvious ones are of course taken. I suppose that eventually if this convention takes off in a big way then it won't matter if the name is slightly longer or less conventional, but it is going to be a bit of a wait to find out whether it was worth laying out the cash.

It's worth trying to pick up a .mobi name or two and holding onto it. We've managed to get some quite decent ones and I'm sure that with a bit of creative searching you can still find them. You have to lock in for 2 years, though, so you have to make that decision.

What is the purpose of the .mobi domains? Are the meant to be used only on cell phones or is the idea to try and build websites using them too? I've seen them mentioned, but have no clear understanding of why people are buying them up.
