Reciprocal directories I am on the fence about. They seem to work but many times the sites i am mirroring with go down and i am left with a bunch of dead links.

Opinions?

I think you need to use a service like Links Manager to keep track of everything for you. Unfortunately, I find their user interface to be much too tedious when you have more than a few entries to deal with.

Trying to do Reciprocals on your own is a bare. You have to check the links regularly, check for no follows, check for robots and meta tags that would block the robots from seeing it.

What is Link Manager? Sounds interesting. I don't do reciprocal directories, because for the reason you mentioned, they go down too often.

Follow the link above... I think it costs $29/mo. They keep track of the links and tell you who has a return link or not... and they spider all the pages to keep track.

$29 a month? Why isn't it just a one time fee? That's a rip off.

Comment #5 Nancy from Los Angeles (Contact Member) -

Because they do not offer a 1 time service. They constantly check the links for the return links. So if you do a link exchange with someone and they drop your link in 6 months, linksmanager will let you know.

That is the value in it.

Let's say you set up a link exchange with 500 sites. You want to check those links everymonth? What about 1, 000?

Comment #6 Sapphire from Outer Space (Contact Member) -

$29 a month seems reasonable to me. Or you could just spend hours checking all those links manually if you have that kind of time. Assume you have 1, 000 links... if you could run through 4 links a minute (assuming everything loaded quickly), it would take you over 4 hours to check those links. You have to decide if your time is worth $7.25 an hour. I'd rather just pay someone.

Thanks for the information on that. I hadn't heard of a Links Manager before either. Will definitely be looking into it. My time is money and I'd rather use it for making some not looking at all the links.

If you don't have something to manage links, it's not worth looking into paid or reciprocal directories. If it's paid, you can get your money back (if you're using PayPal), and if it's reciprocal, well, you take the link down.

You may try linkmetro.com they have free reciprocal linking service and allows you to keep track.

I've started a small list of directories (including this one) that have listed our band, whether they require a recip or not, just to see what happens. Right now we've got a PR of 4 and for some reason I really want to see it go to a 5, though I'm not sure what I'd do with a 5 if I had it.

I've been going through the vilesilencer list and I'm up to G, and that's just with the new directories. It's becoming sort of a hobby, as if I need another hobby. I doubt if I make it to 100 listings.
