If everybody made a part of their site into a reciprocal link directory, it would be a really easy way to get backlinks. Don't you think? I might actually do this, it just came to me right now.

Yes, but the problem is managing them. Checking them the first time, checking for nofollows... checking once a month to make sure they other people didn't remove them...

http://www.linksmanager.com does all that for you... but the price can add up and you still have a lot of time not accepting all the spam sites people put in there.

Well if you have employees on your site you could add that to their list of duties, but most websites are run by only one person, sometimes two.

The other issue is with SPAM and inappropriate content. You can add a link to one site and then they switch it under the hood to really inappropriate concept or some spamming outfit and then you're in trouble.

It definitely takes a lot of maintenance but it's also the sort of job you can have run by a college kid or part timer so it's not that bad.

Sure you could hire a college kid for parttime work looking after it for you. Wouldn't cost you much but minimum wages. Then you could have them look at it every other day for a couple of hours.

Really depends on how much you are making of your site in the first place.

But how would you be sure the college kid was actually doing the job unless you checked behind him? And if you're going to go to the trouble to check behind them, then you might as well be doing it yourself.
