After reading here I figured that a paid directory would be a waste of money. I saw where there is a list here of directories but does anyone have used or is using a good one? Is there a directory that is better than the others or are they all about the same?

I don't think you want to pick "1 best". You want to submit to many directories.
Some people like high PR. Below is a link to directories ordered by PR and apparently fast at approving your submissions.
Some say they take 6 or 8 months to approve a submission. That seems like a wee bit too long!
