CSS - CSS CSS compatibility in IE7 vs IE6 Tags: css, css_ie6, css_ie7 |

I have recently run into some CSS issues that have had strikingly different results in IE6 and IE7. We develop in Firefox so everything looks great there, but in IE6 it just doesn't work. IE7 is fine though. It did lead me to a great Firefox extension for those that are interested called IE View (link included). It let's you right click on a page in Firefox and bring that same page up in IE. Very handy.

I noticed the javascript "prompt" function is blocked by IE7's default pop-up blocker.

IE7 actually blocks just about everything that is not a standard link. It's nice to have some security and all, but I think they've taken it too far with IE7. It's just too restrictive now. Maybe there are settings that can be relaxed, but I haven't had a chance to look yet.

What may not be important today -- your website functioning perfectly on IE7 will be of critical importance shortly. It seems microsoft is automatically updating everyone to IE7. So get it installed NOW and get your webpages working with it NOW.

There's no doubt that Firefox has a much nicer CSS output than IE. Looked at side by side it is really a noticeable difference, but I have found that certain scripts seem to bomb FF regularly whereas they will run perfectly in exactly the same scenario in IE6 or IE7. We use DotNetNuke sites extensively and have found that scripts running in certain of the modules will cause FF to hang time after time, whereas IE is as smooth as could be. Haven't got to the bottom of this one yet.

Firefox sounds an amazing browser, but is it being used widely enough to merit using it as one's default browser? Presumably there is no great likelihood that it will not function as well as IE7 and in fact it seems that Microsoft have actually copied the FF interface now with their tabbed browsing interface which is a good sign for FF :)

I can't stand tabbing. That aside, I wouldn't use IE (any version) if you paid me too! I use Firefox for all my normal browsing. Unfortunately, when doing websites, I have to use IE to make sure they function properly. Who could imaging disabling the javascript prompt function as part of their pop up blocking.

Yes, the tabbing is a real turn-off, although I have gotten used to it as there is really no choice these days. Don't know why they all have to copy each other, but presumably the feedback they've had from users was in favor of it.

Aside from the incredibly negative image that Microsoft seems to have built up over the years, is IE really so bad after all? As a browser it still seems the best out there, although I must say that since I started playing with FF, I've noticed that IE seems to crawl sometimes in comparison. It is still more stable though as far as my experience goes and freezes less than FF.

I have no gripe with Bill Gates or his company, and there is no competition for their OS out in the marketplace. Linux is still the province of the geeks and no-one can claim that it offers any real alternative to MS, whether in terms of OS or browsers. So called free alternatives are neither free or alternatives when one gets down to the nitty gritty of it, and IE is still streets ahead of the competition, although I agree that Firefox is making a spirited challenge.

I am constantly amazed at the great addons for FF. For developing a site the help one gets using FF far outweighs any of the negatives. These developer tools are absolutely free and make it an absolute pleasure to work with FF. I'm all for it.

I love the tabbing...sometimes I have more than 10 tabs open at once. He he. Seriously though, my husband just purchased a brand new computer with vista on it and although I do like it, it is very new to me and I'm not one on change.

I'd love to get some of the developer add-ons for FireFox, I once came across a site that had some excellent tools including one that enabled one to grab the style sheet of any website and then edit it. I can't seem to find it though anymore.
I have started using FireFox a lot more and must say that I find those developers tools - many of which are supplied regularly by updates right in FireFox - to be amazingly useful. I still do experience problems with some scripts causing the browser to hang though.

I love FireFox too. I switched a while back to making it my default browser as I find it much faster than IE. Is there any obvious reason why the technology that Mozilla is using should make it so much faster loading than IE? Almost any site loads appreciably faster for me with FF.

I am coming around to FireFox and must say that I have to agree it is slick, fast and has many very useful tools built right in. Seems to be the browser of the future.

I use firefox only on FreeBSD. On windows I use IE as little as possible, ie: only to make sure pages render suitable, and firefox for any actual "work".But remember in the olden days when it was netscape! In a year or two maybe firefox will be on the back burner too!
