Is php used mainly for forum websites, or is it used for other types of sites as well? I'm not very familiar with it, but I am curious.

PHP is used by people too lazy to learn Perl.Ok, seriously, there are a number of forum and directory scripts written in perl.

Haha Nancy stop throwing Perls of wisdom around! In the vast scheme of things PHP is OK but man you have to keep up with all the latest everything. I also find PHP patches and codes and glitche fixes time consuming and expensive.

Opps... "Ok, seriously, there are a number of forum and directory scripts written in perl."I meant in PHP.

Nancy I see. But finding someone who understands exactly what you are trying to do, hiring them, getting some good performance without inflation of fees is nigh onto impossible these days. The good people are too busy, the bad people arrest your development.Unless you have a ton of time to kill, PHP can be a time vacuum. But it can keep out the hackers.

Ok so PHP, is it good or is it bad then. I guess some people find it immensely helpful, but time consuming while others find it to be a waste of time. Really, what is it, and why do I need to know about it?

Isn't PHP what vbulletin uses? And phpbb? I thought you had to know it in order to have a forum site? Are there other ways of doing a forum besides PHP?

PHP is a programming language. It is usedto develop websites ranging from informational sites to forums to large scale enterprise applications. There are various forum solutions which you can use out of the box (free or paid) such as phpBB. The language itself is very flexible although not the most robust. The solutions that are created using PHP are only as good as the developers and the testing that has been carried out so while it's true that phpBB requires a ton of patches and has been known to have various security flaws, the language itself is not necessarily at fault for that.
