I don't think personal blogs have that much opportunity to make money. Unless a blog is really specific, I don't think it can compete with others. There are so many personal blogs out there, no one would read and it would be nearly impossible to make a reasonable income.

Personal blogs are just there to have as something like a journal. Many women start blogs when they get pregnant, just for an example. They have something they have written daily about their pregnancy so that they can have it forever.

I don't think that it can. I think they are more just for personal use. The topics usually talked about aren't niche and wouldn't gather many readers unless it is something really unsual.

While many blogs start off as personal 'diaries' for lack of a better term, I think that today more and more people are thinking of building a blog that can ultimately lead to some form of advertising based income. So many blogs today seem intent on soliciting contributions in the form of 'support' adverts. This could be to offset the cost of the hosting, but I suspect that in most cases people are intent on creating income from their blogs.

It completely turns me off when I get onto a blog and see advert after advert down the side. I can understand this on a website, but surely the idea of a blog is to output one's creative writing talents or to digest someone else's, not to make money?

Virtually any site worth anything today is employing adsense for earning revenue, but how would a personal blog utilize this fully? I can understand where content is meaningful and directed, but personal reminiscences, as found on many blogs are hardly going to generate meaningful links, so why would anyone click on them?

While it's true that many blogs don't really provide specific targeted content for google adsense ads, the beauty of adsense links is that enough interesting ones will invariably turn up to encourage an occasional viwer to click. Hence a small, but regular income stream.
