At the risk of sounding really stupid, what exactly is a blog? I've heard the term but I don't really know what it is. How is it different than a regular website? I've never really known anyone I could ask about this, so I figured now is my chance to toss that question out there.

A blog is more a direct communication from a single person, like a letter or a note. It has more freedom of expression (ideally) than a corproate summary or sales pitch.Strategically people can load text into the blog with hyperlinks back to their site, which may score higher in thre SEO. Blogs usually a single topic, like gossip or a TV show.

So it's just basically a personal webpage where you give your opinion on a given subject? Does it always have to be one single subject or can you have a blog where you just give your opinion on a variety of things and issues?

It can be a variety. But people generally want to attract users looking for the same topic of bunches of information. Also there is a section for after every article for users to make comments.

A "blog" is more of a style of website than a reference to content. And of course there are many styles of blogs!

Basically, a blog is like your own personal diary. You can have a blog with your day to day thoughts and ideas or you can run a blog (as some people do) that is specific to an activity you enjoy such as playing poker, going to theatre, going skiing, etc. Then when people are looking for information on a specific topic they will have access to your blog. It is really a story of how you feel about something, how you did something, how you wish things were. As I said it's more of a personal diary but a lot of people catalogue their main activity for others to read.

Most people use a blog to comment on what is going on in their lives. More or less like a journal done on the computer. Some people allow others to comment or post on their blogs. There are blogs for wide range of topics on different sites. I did a blog when I was pregnant.

It is officially defined as a weblog, and, as was said, is like an online diary. Things are changing now, though, people are starting to use them for money.

It seems that has moved from being more of a personal thing to a money making source. I know a lot of people who had google adsense on their blog, click bank, and other affliate sites.

Using the term "blog" is confusing, makes no sense and is therefore completely unnecessary. We have the internet. Everything we write on it is therefore a message, a letter. In other words, it's like simply writing information you want passed on to someone. You're writing a letter, an article, except it's on the internet. It doesn't need any title. Leave it at that.

We have the world and everything in it and it all exists... so we shouldn't bother having names for anything because everything is all part of the world?!?!?!

I think you guys are all wrong. Blog is nothing more than a contraction of what used to be called a Web Log.

In other words, everyone is entitled to my opinion, and a blog is the means to that end?

I want to understand this term and record my experiences, reactions and thoughts for use of others who may like to.I live in Pakistan and experiences of our cultre and society are somewhat amazing and change shape and colour day by day.I want to keep a record of them.I think this method, blog, can help me to save my record. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
