the number one mistake people make

Amar from Earth -

People put TOO MANY things on the site!

Toooo much gooooogle too much adsense tooo many blinking affiliate and squeeze pages oy vey.

Is it really that hard to figure out this is a very unattractive page to viewers?

Oick 1 or 2 key affiliates and make sure their colors and product blends with your site audience.

e.g. my site at www.prepsportshq.com

It is also important that the affiliate links relate to the content of your website. If your website is about swimming and you are promoting Golf Vacations you'll have a tough sell.

Comment #2 PokerPrincess from Hogstown, The Universe -

Oh definitely I agree with Nancy.... all sites need to have similar or related sites. Although you can get away with putting nonesensical stuff like Horoscopes and Joke pages which will keep bring people back.

Also another link you should have is something about travel and weather. These extra topics along with your main theme will definitely attract people from all walks of life and a lot of traffic should mean more sales, more contest entries. But keep the site "clean" looking so they want to come back and easy navigation.

Comment #3 Paul Roupinian from Redondo beach -

I don't go to any site for the Horoscope and joke pages. I go because there is content there or a community i can't find anywhere else for a certain topic, tv shows, political movement, etc.

Comment #4 Angel from Heaven -

I agree that some people take it to the extreme, but without the adsense, textlinks, banners, etc. sites just wouldn't pay for themselves. Theres a lot of expense to running a site, so the advertisements are necessary.

Yes the advertising is necessary, however, too much can be overloading. If you need a lot of advertising to pay for the site then set it up in an attractive manner and make sure it blends with your site colours.

When you go to other sites check out how they "appear" to you. If you see things you don't like about the appearance then make sure you don't do the same thing to your site.

Comment #6 Angel from Heaven -

I've always done that. One thing that I see on sites that I find extremely distracting are neon flashing banners. I will never do that to my site, regardless of how much it pays.

Comment #7 Sweet_River from Downtown Tijuana, South -

I don't blame you for the not wanting neon flashing banners. First of all they take up a lot of memory and become memory hogs. Remember that when you are putting up a site you don't want too many memory hogs on it or it will be slow loading and people will get tired of waiting.

I belonged to a fourm that had a flashing moving banner at the top of the page and it drove me crazy so I left the forum. This can happen with your sales sites as well.

Comment #8 Shannon from The Office -

I definitely agree...I had posted on another thread about this - if I am on a site that has too many of those flashy banners it's a big turnoff for me...I will right away get out of it. Some sites have ads that have no relation to the content of the site either...let's you know right away that they don't care to retain their readers and they only want money.

Comment #9 Erin from The Valley -

I've seen a lot of sites that have Amazon on there now. I'm wondering how successful it is. Has anyone here had any luck?

Comment #10 delino from California -

I think if you're targeting a very specific niche then Amazon can be a pretty decent affiliate. Most people buy books online so if you're selling books (or even products) from Amazon in areas that are very targeted then it should work. I haven't really tried it out though to be honest.

Comment #11 Marcia from Arizona -

I've not tried Amazon either as I don't really have a particular "niche" type site...I have a blog that is pretty much all over the place so I don't think that Amazon would really target anyone specific.
