Everybody seems to be looking at it from the other perspective, i.e. what affiliate programs should I use and how effective are they. I am wondering what it takes to make my own site an affiliate so that others will be marketing my product. Also, is it worth the time and effort? Do you need to start doing extra programming on your own site to make it work?

I believe you can go to most of the affiliate programs such as LinkShare and apply to be a seller and then they work with you to get it done. You'll obviously have to create banners and have a URL that will enable tracking to indicate when a click or sale has been made, but it's not too difficult.

You'll probably find that shareasale is the least expensive, fastest and easiest to get started with. They manage all the tracking and paying so you can get on with the objective of your website without worrying about the details on the affiliate side.

Setting yourself up as an affiliate also means getting some sort of contract made up (and you should use a lawyer for that) so that when someone becomes an affiliate of yours they know exactly how it will benefit them and what they are allowed to do.You really do need a contract for that and it does take some negotiation with the other sites to ensure that it will work the way you wat it to. Poker sites have lots of affiliates... go take a look at what their affiliate contract looks like and how you have to go about becoming an affiliate of theirs. I'm sure that you could probably clone something that will work for the type of site that you want to try.

Sweetness thanks so much for the valuable information. A contract is a great idea and very valuanle as well. We have a lawyer for any business move we make. Great advice on this site. It has really helped me quite a bit.

I have a few affliate links on my blog and it is not hard at all. I never went through a lawyer I contacted the companies that offered and filled out a few apps. I had them all approved in a few days. Maybe it is different for blogs.

I was just browsing clickbank.com earlier and they allow you to do this. I'm sure linkshare and the others do as well. Check out clickbank though as it looked really straight forward.
