Marketing a new forum

What are some of the best ways to promote and market new forums? I'm looking for different views and exerperiences in this matter and would appreciate some input.

I am wondering the same thing. I would figure that advertising on other forums may be a good idea. I know people of many particular industries share banners with businesses of the same industry. You make want to promote your forum on websites that would be similar to your topic.

Look at the link for "forum hosts" wanted at the very top right corner of this site. It looks like the concept is similiar to that of a "moderator" but without those "moderation" responsiblities.

Sounds like a great way to promote a website. It looks like they are seeking forum hosts on a whole range of topics.

Well of course the best way is through word of mouth. Send an e-mail out to all your buddies on msn, yahoo, aim and in your e-mail address book. Tell them about your new forum and invite them to come and take a look.

If they join ask them to recommend other friends and offer them something in return. For instance you could offer them points that they can use in a contest you run every week or month on your forum. The more points the more entries.

Word of mouth, adding to your sig line in other forums, sending emails out to your friends. If you have myspace post a bulletin to all your friends announcing your new forum.
